As the period of confinement takes hold in several countries to cope with the spread of the coronavirus, artists transform their creations into prevention messages.

On the Internet, major events and periods of crisis never take long to turn into memes . And the sanitary emergency that we are going through today does not cut it, as evidenced by The Creation of Adam, a famous fresco by Michel Ange who has had some success with artists who are supporters of reappropriation. Bottle of hydroalcoholic gel, latex gloves, protective suits… Pastiches, the figures of God and Adam whose iconic indexes meet (without ever touching each other) are also found in quarantine.

Whether it’s helping us to put things into perspective, laughing at the news or pushing us to respect the rules of hygiene and confinement, the artists seize the crisis with humorous vignettes and diversions. A quick overview.

    Hijacked masterpieces

We talk about hygiene as much …

That madness around certain “rare” commodities …

I made this painting in 2018, as part of my show Not That We Don’t, which was centered around the notion that imposed societal norms (such as hygienic standards) function to keep us under control by a tacit agreement to Follow The Rules, or else. The current moment feels like the “or else” part. The unspoken, abject thing we collectively feared would occur if we failed to wipe our feet on the welcome mat has manifested. While there are very good reasons for adhering to these hygienic standards, ESPECIALLY right now, there is also an implicit fear of *the other* that is perpetuated by obsessively striving for purity.. Just want to point out that this painting is from over a year ago, and not a direct response to this moment- our fear of the impure/ unknown is not new. Anyway let’s like, be super frickin hygienic and cautious and respectful of each other’s health, and listen to science, and our bodies (STAY HOME IF UR SICK! Even if you’re young and not worried, don’t put others at risk!) but let’s not fall too far into a paranoid distrust of one another. My point is: dont panic, but, if you come anywhere near me I’m sending you STRAIGHT to the nearest sink to wash those paws.. have a good day love you

    And even sacred art

Created by the Chinese designer Duyi Han in a church in Hubei province (home of the epidemic), the fresco The Saints Wear White pays tribute to the medical professionals who risked their lives to treat the sick.
