    BRIGHTON 1-1 CHELSEA | AZPILICUETA (9), JAHANBAKHSH (85)

The result at the Amex Stadium helped Brighton end a run of nine straight league defeats by Chelsea stretching back to 1983 while Frank Lampard’s side were left to rue the missed chance to seal back-to-back league wins for the first time since November.

Left back Azpilicueta celebrated his 100th start as Chelsea captain with the opening goal, guiding the ball home from close range in the 10th minute after Tammy Abraham’s shot was blocked near the goal line by Brighton’s Aaron Mooy following a corner.

Substitute Jahanbakhsh then produced a goal for the highlight reels with six minutes left on the clock, with a superb overhead kick that flew into the bottom corner giving Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga no chance.

Arrizabalaga had earlier denied another Brighton substitute in Aaron Connolly, who turned and shot from close range while Chelsea also had several chances to close out the game.

Earlier, Chelsea had stepped off the gas pedal following their goal and nearly paid the price before the break but Arrizabalaga produced another acrobatic save to deny Leandro Trossard.

Brighton XI: Ryan, Burn, Dunk, Webster, Montoya, Trossard, Mooy, Bissouma, Alzate, Propper, Maupay

Chelsea XI: Arrizabalaga, James, Rudiger, Zouma, Azpilicueta, Kante, Jorginho, Willian, Mount, Pulisic, Abraham

    • Cesar Azpilicueta lashes home from close range in the ninth minute
    • Alireza Jahanbakhsh scores outrageous overhead kick

    BRIGHTON 1-1 CHELSEA

FT: It’s all over folks! A moment of brilliance from Alireza Jahanbakhsh has secured Brighton a point against Frank Lampard’s Chelsea. The visitors didn’t keep their foot on the gas and the draw is probably a fair result on balance.

94: Danger! This really is last chance saloon as Reece James brings down Alireza Jahanbakhsh just outside the penalty area. Make no mistake, this is a serious chance. Lewis Dunk stands over it… saved! A tame effort is easily caught by Arrizabalaga.

92: Mateo Kovacic is lucky to have received his marching orders for cynically bringing down Trossard on the counter. Brighton opt to take it short rather than send the big boys up.

90: Maupay yellow carded for contesting a ball that was supposed to be uncontested. Didn’t realise you get booked for that. Four minutes of added time.

89: What a save! Honestly, we’ve been waiting all afternoon for this one to heat up and now it’s on fire! The ball is played back to Neal Maupay, who arrives in the penalty area unmarked to thrash a first-time effort on target. Kepa makes a tremendous save.

87: Close! Chelsea nearly wrestle back the lead after Tammy Abraham finds Callum Hudson-Odoi in space. The substitute leaves Martin Montoya for dead before curling wide of the target.

    BRIGHTON 1-1 CHELSEA | JAHANBAKHSH

84: GOAL! What?! Brighton substitute Alireza Jahanbakhsh has just scored an outrageous overhead kick. I love 2020!

Lewis Dunk heads a corner out to the Iran international, who sets himself before unleashing an incredible, acrobatic overhead kick past a motionless Kepa Arrizabalaga.

83: Mateo Kovacic is booked for bundling into the back of Neal Maupay and Brighton have another free-kick. It’s more central this time within shooting distance. Trossard steps up… and it’s absolutely abysmal. Played a quick one-two before curling it five-yards wide.

80: Danger! Mateo Kovacic commits the foul on the right and Brighton send up the giants from the back. Trossard to deliver… SAVE! The ball dribbles through a crowd of players and falls at the feet of Aaron Connolly. He swivels and forces a good one-handed stop from Kepa Arrizabalaga.

78: Tammy Abraham is grabbing his backside and that’s because Bernardo has just wildly swung his leg to clear the ball and connected with his opponents bottom. Slapstick at its finest.

75: Alireza Jahanbakhsh latches onto a blocked effort but sends it miles high and wide of the target. Brighton not finding chances easy to come by with Chelsea defending very well indeed.

73: Lewis Dunk quickly follows Kurt Zouma into the book after getting out-muscled by Tammy Abraham. Frank Lampard makes a change with Mateo Kovacic on for Mason Mount.

70: Final 20 minutes in Brighton and Chelsea still have their slender one-goal lead. Where’s the NYD drama coming from?!

69: Willian darts through the middle but waits, waits and waits some more until Tammy Abraham has strayed offside. Yes, he then releases the pass. Silly. Alireza Jahanbakhsh replaces Aaron Mooy and Kurt Zouma is booked for a cynical foul on Aaron Connolly.

66: Good response from Chelsea as Mason Mount weaves his way into the penalty area. He reaches the byline and lays it off for Christian Pulisic, whose cross is hammered wide by Reece James via a deflection. And that’s Pulisic’s last action as Callum Hudson-Odoi replaces him.

63: Getting closer. Aaron Mooy spots Aaron Connolly between the two Chelsea centre-backs but the pass has too much on it.

60: Whisper it quietly – we may have a game of football on our hands here! Brighton enjoy a period of sustained pressure with Aaron Mooy, Neal Maupay and Aaron Connolly combining nicely until Antonio Rudiger hoofs the final cross into orbit.

57: First chance of the half for Chelsea as Christian Pulisic has a good shot straight at Mat Ryan. Frank Lampard doesn’t look entirely satisfied with what he’s seeing. N’Golo Kante follows that what a shanked volley that Mat Ryan easily gathers.

54: He’s bottled that! Antonio Rudiger looks to have used the top of his arm/shoulder to block a through ball. Brighton are screaming for action but referee Stuart Attwell waves play away. I’d like to see that again.

51: Aaron Connolly showing his hunger. He’s running around like a headless chicken trying to put pressure on Antonio Rudiger and Kurt Zouma. Not found a chink in the armour yet but that won’t matter to the 20-year-old.

48: Gosh, what a messy start to the half. Everything is being played around the midfield with fouls going in all over the place. A stat Graham Potter won’t want to hear is that Chelsea have lost just one of their last 60 Premier League games when leading at half time.

    BRIGHTON 0-1 CHELSEA

45: And we’re back underway in Sussex. They do a lovely beer called Sussex Best from Harvey’s Brewery at the Amex Stadium. I believe it’s brewed in Lewes and stands alone as my favourite ale. Consider yourselves informed. Oh, and there’s been a change for Brighton with Aaron Connolly on for Yves Bissouma. Live-wire this lad.

    BRIGHTON 0-1 CHELSEA

HT: Christian Pulisic lashes wide just before the whistle. Chelsea take a deserved one-goal lead in with them at the break. Brighton were poor for the majority of the 45 minutes but showed signs of life towards the end.

44: Save! Finally some action at the Amex Stadium! Neal Maupay is freed down the left channel and the forward lays it back for Leandro Trossard, whose curling effort is palmed away by Kepa Arrizabalaga. Signs of life from the Seagulls.

42: Aston Villa have doubled their lead over Burnley, who are clearly suffering from a NYE hangover. Sean Dyche’s side have been woeful. Jack Grealish with the second and that makes perfect sense because I took him out of my Fantasy Football side this morning.

39: The game’s just lost what little spark it had over the last few minutes. Just a bunch of wayward passes and hopeful lofted crosses. Not a great watch truth be told.

36: Brighton love set-pieces. It’s just a fact. Aaron Mooy’s corner is flicked on and Kepa Arrizabalaga is completely lost trying to punch it clear. The Seagulls win another courtesy of Yves Bissouma, but Adam Webster can’t direct his header on target.

33: Frustration setting in for the Brighton fans, who haven’t seen anything from their side. Zero shots on target in the opening 33 minutes.

30: Aston Villa have now officially taken the lead against Burnley. Wesley, whose heel was offside for Jack Grealish’s disallowed opener, made the breakthrough. It’s 1-0 at Turf Moor.

29: Bit greedy, Tammy. Very greedy actually. Tammy Abraham brings the ball forward from the halfway line but ignores Willian, who absolutely busted a gut to overlap him on the right. Abraham decides to fire himself and the deflected shot sails over. Frank Lampard didn’t look impressed.

26: The Seagulls still haven’t been able to lay a glove on Chelsea in the final third. A speculative Leandro Trossard cross into the arms of Kepa Arrizabalaga is about as close as they’ve come.

23: Injury! 6ft7” Dan Burn can’t continue. The giant defender, filling in at left-back, goes off with his arm in a sling. Perhaps dislocated? Although I’ve never practiced medicine. Brazilian Bernardo comes on to replace him.

20: Ouch! Reece James challenges Dan Burn for an aerial battle and the Brighton man stays down. Didn’t look like anything cynical but that’ll be no consolation for Graham Potter’s side.

17: Bit disappointing from the hosts. They’ve been playing some nice stuff in recent weeks but don’t seem capable of stringing more than three passes together at the moment.

14: Hail Cesar. Azpilicueta scores the first goal of the decade. I stole that from Gary Linker on Twitter. In other, more relevant news, Reece James and Willian combine down the right before the full-back delivers his fourth dangerous cross of the afternoon.

11: Jack Grealish has just had a goal ruled out by Var against Burnley at Turf Moor. It’s a stupid decision by all accounts but you probably knew that already…

    BRIGHTON 0-1 CHELSEA | AZPILICUETA

9: GOAL! It won’t make the end-of-season highlights reel – but Chelsea have taken the lead through Cesar Azpilicueta.

Aaron Mooy fails to clear Tammy Abraham’s header back into the penalty area and Azpilicueta is there to hammer home from three yards away. Quick VAR check for almost no reason and the goal is awarded.

Azpilicueta has scored three goals in his last 11 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions – his previous three goals for the club were spread across 118 games.

8: Brighton hit back! Neal Maupay, who’s been a nuisance all season drifts in behind the Chelsea defence before laying it back for Steven Alzate. His deflected effort dribbles wide and the corner comes to nothing with referee Stuart Attwell spotting one of the Brighton giants committing a foul.

5: Chance comes and goes for Reece James down that right channel. N’Golo Kante spreads it wide for the defender, who drives into the box and fires into the side-netting.

3: I should mention the glamorous battle over at Turf Moor is underway. Aston Villa and Burnley battling it out. I should imagine there will be Claret everywhere during that one. I’ll see myself out.

Not a great deal to discuss in these opening stages. Chelsea shading it in-terms of possession but neither side have created anything of note.

    BRIGHTON 0-0 CHELSEA

1: And we’re underway on a gloomy south coast. Floodlights are on at a packed and rowdy Amex Stadium. Tough to predict this one – but Brighton aren’t without hope against the away day specialists. Aaron Mooy has been playing so well lately – so I’ll plump for a 1-1 draw.

    The key…

Tammy Abraham’s 12 Premier League goals have been worth 12 points to Chelsea so far this season – no other player’s goals have been more valuable to their side (level with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mane).

    Frank’s protection

Frank’s protection sounds like a knock-off security firm in Dagenham. Just me? Ok…

Well Frank Lampard wants to shield Callum Hudson-Odoi from social media criticism to help the England forward rediscover top form at Chelsea.

The 19-year-old was trolled on social media in the wake of that lacklustre defeat to Southampton on Boxing Day, but put in a brighter cameo in Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League win at Arsenal.

And now Blues boss Lampard has pledged to help Hudson-Odoi shake off the outside criticism and graft his way back to his best.

“I think it’s a lot at 19 to say with one performance you must produce instantly or you’ll get social media criticism, and I’ll certainly protect him against that,” said Lampard.

“I’ve not spoken to him about that specifically and unfortunately on social media that’s par for the course. That’s something unfortunately that you’ve got to have a very thick skin about.”

    What to expect…

Frank Lampard is determined to have a big say in how his young squad is strengthened, with reports suggesting a bumper budget of £150million.

The Blues have already been linked with the likes of Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha and Leicester defender Ben Chilwell.

European talent such as RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, Lyon forward Moussa Dembele and Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare are also said to be on the shopping list.

Brighton boss Graham Potter is said to have an eye on Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker-Peters and CSKA Moscow striker Fedor Chalov, while Bournemouth are reportedly keen on Bristol City’s Josh Brownhill.

    Twitter reaction

Tim: Always a bit nervous when Mateo Kovacic is missing as no one else seems to carry the ball through midfield and beat players so consistently. Hopefully a fit Reece James and Christian Pulisic will address that. A brace each for Tammy Abraham & Pulisic. Come on you Chels!

Alan: Willian’s got horse lungs, I’m convinced. How’s he starting and playing his fourth game in a row at the age of 31, in less than two weeks?!

Mikhail: I hope that Frank Lampard isn’t rushing Reece James through his injury. Him starting at RB is immense. Tammy Abraham will need those accurate crosses tonight to score past the likes of Lewis Dunk.

    The transfer window…

Ready for a month of complete transfer insanity? Me neither.

We’re only 12 hours into the New Year and already Tammy Abraham has been linked with a mega-money move to Manchester City.

Abraham’s contract at Stamford Bridge does not run out until June 2022 though reports suggest he is stalling over signing a new deal.

Abraham is believed to be demanding a £180,000 per week contract from the Blues, which would represent a significant rise.

And Le10Sport claim that Manchester City have been alerted to the difficulties that Abraham is facing in his negotiations with Chelsea.

    Tariq Lamptey contract

Chelsea supporters MUST be excited about this prospect. Tariq Lamptey impressed when coming on as a substitute against Arsenal last week.

Lamptey had been called in from his Christmas break to feature for the first team at the Emirates Stadium, with Marcos Alonso and Reece James injured.

And now Lampard hopes the 19-year-old will commit his future to the Stamford Bridge club, especially given the support of the Blues’ backroom staff.

Asked if Lamptey could sign a new Chelsea deal, Lampard said: “We’ll see, he’s talking with the club and hopefully he feels a bit of love that we’ve parachuted him in.”

    He’s on the bench today.

    Team news – Chelsea

Frank Lampard freshens up his starting XI with three changes.

It’s no surprise to see Jorginho recalled having made such a big impact during the dramatic late victory over Arsenal last week. He’s in ahead of Mateo Kovacic.

Reece James and Christian Pulisic also return to the line up in place of Emerson and Fikayo Tomori, who drop to the bench as Frank Lampard switches to four at the back.

    Team news – Brighton

Graham Potter makes two changes from the side who beat Bournemouth at the Amex Stadium last week.

Rather surprisingly, Dale Stephens and Pascal Gross have to settle for a place on the bench again.

Adam Webster and Steven Alzate come in for Shane Duffy and Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who scored his first goal against the Cherries and still gets dropped.

It’s too soon for Solly March, who could feature in the FA Cup this weekend.

    What’s on?

Absolutely loads. And It’s all LIVE on BT Sport apparently. They didn’t pay me to say that by the way – although if anyone from BT is reading, I wouldn’t reject a free subscription…

Anyway, nine fixtures to look forward to today. And due to the differing start times – it’s wall-to-wall football all day long.

    Brighton v Chelsea 12:30, Burnley v Aston Villa 12:30, Newcastle v Leicester 15:00, Southampton v Tottenham 15:00, Watford v Wolves 15:00, Manchester City v Everton 17:30, Norwich v Crystal Palace 17:30, West Ham v Bournemouth 17:30, Arsenal v Manchester United 20:00.

    Afternoon…

Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Premier League as Chelsea visit Brighton.

Allow me to be the 25th person to wish you a Happy New Year. All your wildest dreams will come true in 2020 etc…

Sorry my heart wasn’t in that. The NYE thing is lost on me. Buying tickets to terrible clubs, queuing twice as long for a pint and then finding that after all the revelry – It’s Wednesday.

    Right, ready for some football?

    BRIGHTON vs CHELSEA

Brighton have no new injury worries ahead of hosting Chelsea. Midfielder Solly March is still recovering after undergoing groin surgery earlier this month and remains unavailable.

Colombian winger Jose Izquierdo has not featured for Brighton since April and continues to recover from a knee injury, with no return date set.

Christian Pulisic could be available for Chelsea’s trip to the Amex after a hamstring problem. Full-backs Marcos Alonso (hamstring) and Reece James (ankle) remain doubtful after missing the Emirates Stadium victory.

Last season: Chelsea 3 Brighton 0, Brighton 1 Chelsea 2

Top scorers: Neal Maupay (Brighton) 7; Tammy Abraham (Chelsea) 14

    Referee: Stuart Attwell (Warwickshire)
