Chelsea would be a better option for Dries Mertens this summer than Arsenal, says Liverpool legend Steve Nicol. Chelsea were linked with a move for Mertens in January and Express Sport understands Arsenal were also interested in the experienced forward. The Belgian is out of contract at Napoli at the end of the season.
Nicol believes Mertens would be a good addition to any squad but cannot see him being a regular starter at Arsenal.
However, he thinks he would have a better chance of getting in the Chelsea side.
“Listen, Dries Mertens would be a good signing for anybody,” Nicol told ESPN FC.
“Thirty-two, still flying, still scoring goals, I just don’t think it’s to Arsenal though.
“One because I think Arteta likes him and two there’s not a team on this planet other than Arsenal paying the wages he’s on.
“No [I can’t see him signing a new Arsenal contract], too much [money].”
Meanwhile, Ozil admits the players are happier under new head coach Mikel Arteta than previous boss Unai Emery.
The German said: “So, right now, everybody knows tactically that we’re improving. It’s just two months that Mikel has been here, and we have improved a lot tactically.
“Of course, now it’s hard times for us. It’s difficult to say because right now everything is not going well, but we know if everything is going well, if the confidence is back and if we take the right results, we will end in the top four, in the top five.
“We have to believe in ourselves, believe in us as a team, to do what the coach wants.
“We’re in a good way; you see it as well on the pitch, everyone enjoys, everyone is happy. As a player, you have to be happy to give everything on the pitch.”
